And This is Called Paradise

Cozumel Mexico

After two long airplane flights, a very early morning, and plenty of snack food, we arrived at our destination- Cozumel, Mexico. It looked like paradise and for me it was. It couldn't have been more perfect. We stayed at an all inclusive resort right on the beach. There was white sand, warm turquoise water, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and plenty of sunshine. We spent the week wearing shorts, t-shirts and flip flops. I was caked in sunscreen the entire time and I'm happy to report I only got a mild sunburn on the back of legs. The rest of me was just a little pinked. Ryan, on the other hand, wore no sunscreen (except when I insisted he put it on his nose and ears at least) got a little pink which over night turned into a tan. Pout! So not fair. We even had a hammock on the balcony outside our room. We were swinging lazily in the hammock one afternoon when all of a sudden we heard a loud PING!. . . ping! ping! ping! We held very still, sure the hammock would drop out from under us at any second. We relaxed, shifting a little in the hammock and immediately PING!. . . ping! ping! ping! We looked around for the source wondering what was going on. Our discovery: The buttons on the back of my pants had gotten caught in the hammock and were flinging off- literally. They richocheted around the balcony and one flew right off and landed in the pool below us! Ryan went fishing for it and success! I have a little sewing to do, they came off with some force- I have two holes in my pants where the buttons used to be.

We took a Jeep tour around the island one day. Ryan got to drive the Jeep. The rest of the group unanimously decided he was the "professional driver"- it was a stick shift. Giggle. I'm glad he was driving though because the roads in Mexico. . . well, it's not Utah and I don't think there are any rules other than making things as chaotic as possible while driving twice the speed limit with the majority of drivers having consumed a large amount of liquor. It was a little scary. There were signs all over saying "Save water, drink Beer" I found them somewhat comical, but it is the drink of choice.

We had the opportunity of going snorkeling several times while there. The water was so warm! We went a couple times right off the beach at the resort. We saw a Barcuda and a giant Starfish. We also swam with a school of little silvery fish about 2 inches long. There were thousands of them! If you reached out to touch them, they all changed direction at exactly the same moment. It was amazing! I don't know how they did it. We also went snorkeling on the Jeep tour. We were able to swim with some larger fish. I think one got a little agitated though- he bit me! It didn't break the skin, so no associated disease from the fish bite. I loved the snorkeling. I could certainly fall in love with it.
We spent a lot of time just enjoying the sun. We went out on the pier, swam in the pool, walked on the beach and sat under the palm trees. It was perfect. No agenda, no time constraints, no urgent calls for your attention; just paradise.

We sort of had a pet too. We named him Gus. He lived under the roots of a tree just behind our room. I chased him because I thought it was funny to see him run. He was a big iguana- we're probably related actually. I have to bask in the sun to stay warm too. Sadly, I don't have a picture of Gus, but here's one of his cousin who lives at the Mayan ruins and looks strikingly similar to Gus.
